Cindy Sherman In Shanghai

Content Editor: Alice On

Fosun Foundation Shanghai presents Cindy Sherman’s first major retrospective in China. Unpacking Sherman’s creative development from the 1970s to the present, the exhibition demonstrates her impact on contemporary art with 128 iconic works, that span the artist’s 40 plus year career, alongside documentary materials and archival footage. There will be nine new works unveiled- seen before anywhere else in the world.

Even though I’ve never actively thought of my work as feminist or as a political statement, surely everything it was drawn from my observation as a woman in this culture. And a part of that is a love/ hate thing- being infatuated with makeup and glamour and detesting it at the same time. It comes from trying to look like a proper young lady or look as sexy or as beautiful as you can make yourself, and also feeling like a prisoner of that structure

The first six pictures of Untitled Film Stills (1977), show Cindy Sherman impersonating a single blond actress in various roles. The experiment blossomed into a vast portrayal of feminine roles, loosely drawn from film imagery: the sex kitten, the cool socialite, the hardened film-noir heroine, the ingénue and many others. As a collection the pictures capture a fictional culture of femininity, whose artificiality is made all the more prominent by the viewer's knowledge that Sherman herself plays every role.

Nearly two decades later #selfies today are used in very much the same way as a testament to the role of the mass media in our lives, and about the ways in which we experiment with our personal identities - our body becoming a canvas to perform inner psyche and aspirations.

The Making of Untitled Film Stills
”Sherman staged and shot many of the interior scenes from this series in her apartment, while she directed her friends to photograph her in scenes set outdoors, including Untitled Film Still #21. Whether she was the one to release the camera’s shutter or not, she is considered the author of the photographs. However, the images in Untitled Film Stills are not considered self-portraits”.
